2016 Homebuyer Counseling Series
Because low credit scores are rampant in Low-Moderate Income (LMI) communities throughout the country, many LMI persons frequently experience housing, employment, insurance and credit denials. However, when credit is granted the costs are usually exorbitant due their poor credit rating. To combat this problem MLKARC has forged a partnership with Wells Fargo to help area LMI residents acquire the money management skills necessary to avoid scams, stay out of debt, and build assets. Via our partnership with Wells Fargo, LMI participants will receive homebuyer counseling from the Hands on Banking and FDIC’s Money Smart for Adults curriculums. During these counseling sessions, MLKARC’s staff will teach LMI participants how to overcome obstacles to homeownership, how to avoid foreclosure, how to recognize predatory lending practices, how to repair poor credit, how to prepare a spending plan and how to obtain and use credit effectively. The two-hour Homebuyer Counseling sessions will commence Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at 6:00 pm at MLKARC’s office with succeeding sessions occurring October 4, 11, 18 and 25. Depending upon participation, sessions may be moved to the Business Technology Center at Bishop State Community College.
